What is Cupping?
Cupping therapy is a form of myofascial decompression that is well established within Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures as a method of healing. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy as far back as 1,550 B.C
Recently growth in popularity in the west continues due to its health benefits that include:
- Increased blood flow
- Removal of toxins and waste products
- Reduction in muscular tension and knots
- Improved range of movement
- Reduction in pain
How does cupping work?
At The Physio Clinic, we use “dry cupping” where plastic or silicone suction cups are placed on the skin, with a suction gun creating a negative pressure inside the cup, aiding in the separation between the layers of tissues in an affected area on the body. This separation draws blood that is rich in nutrients to the affected area, helping to reduce muscular tension and encourage quicker healing.
What conditions does cupping help with?
Cupping is great for assisting in the treatment of muscular pain caused by tension and overuse such as:
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Headaches
- Upper and lower back pain
- Calf tightness
As part of a massage treatment or on it’s own?
Some massage is usually completed before applying the cups. This enables the therapist to identify areas that require cupping treatment.
Cupping can then be used in a variety of different ways:
- Leave the cups on specific spots for the duration of the treatment.
- Slide the cups across the skin to act as a massage tool.
- Keep the cups placed on the required area whilst moving the surrounding joint.
